OVERVIEW

A kick is defined as an undesirable influx of formation fluid into the borehole. If left unattended a kick can develop into a blowout (an uncontrolled influx of formation fluid into the borehole). While kicks are a problem, they are not too common. However, the penalty for failing to control a kick can be the loss of the well, and quite possibly the loss of the rig and the lives of the crew. Well control procedures vary slightly from rig to rig, and company to company, but four simultaneous operations are normally considered.
