DESCRIPTIONCorrosion in oil & gas industry has been known; several and the harsh environments in which many platforms operate are also causing a considerable number of corrosion-related issues. In fact, the offshore environment is highly corrosive and special stresses put additional pressure on the coating systems used for protection of the steel structures. Offshore maintenance is difficult and the cost is exorbitantly high; it is therefore very important to select quality coating systems and to ensure that they are applied correctly and under the right conditions. Floating offshore production systems such as floating production, storage and offloading facilities (FPSO facilities), SPAR (originally designated as a single point articulated riser, now generically applied cylindrical floating structures), tensioned-leg platforms, and deep draft caisson vessels (DDCV) present a number of corrosion control challenges. Corrosion control of such structures is necessary because of (1) the use of high strength materials on these structures, (2) the need to control weight and reduce corrosion allowance, (3) the contact of the various parts of the structures, (4) a high number of non-welded connections, and (5) difficulties in inspection and monitoring (Ashworth, 1994). The corrosion control systems for these types of structures should be specified with caution and a high degree of conservatism. The operator must also be aware of in-service inspection requirements and allow appropriate monitoring and inspection aids to be specified during construction. The most common method used for the protection of steel in offshore environments is the use of various types of coatings and for the immersion zone, coatings combined with cathodic protection (CP). For proper performance of coating systems and thus durable corrosion protection for such extreme conditions, the fundamental parameters in coating selection must be respected and application that are each critical to achieve the required result. These parameters include the (1) type and condition of the substrate—usually steel, (2) environment and possible additional stresses, (3) quality of any coatings employed, and (4) quality control, such as application of the coating and the inspection protocols |
